This one-hour session provides a practical overview of assistive technology within the context of JCQ access arrangements.

Content includes:

  • An overview of assistive technology and its role in supporting access to examinations
  • The JCQ regulations governing the use of assistive technology
  • Key differences between assistive technology and human support (e.g. readers and scribes)
  • Detailed guidance on specific technologies:
    • Examination reading pens
    • Computer readers (text-to-speech)
    • Screen readers
    • Word processors (including use as a scribe alternative)
    • Speech recognition technology (speech-to-text)
  • Evidence requirements and approval processes (Form 8, Form 9, Form 8RF)
  • Considerations for use in exams testing reading and exams carrying SPAG marks
  • Practical implementation, including training, set-up, and troubleshooting

 

Real examples and learner/SENCo reflections are used throughout to illustrate the impact of assistive technology on independence, confidence, and exam access.
