Description

Handwriting remains a vital academic and functional skill across school, FE, HE and adult settings, and difficulties in handwriting can significantly affect learning, self‑esteem, independence and exam performance.  

This course provides a clear, structured pathway for integrating DASH‑2 into high‑quality diagnostic assessments for SpLD. 

Delegates learn how to administer all five DASH‑2 tasks correctly, score them accurately, interpret results meaningfully, and link handwriting performance to underlying cognitive processes such as working memory, processing speed, motor planning, and orthographic knowledge. The course also clarifies how handwriting should be written up within the SASC Report Format 2025, ensuring assessors produce reports that are compliant, defensible and genuinely helpful for learners. 

Learning outcomes

  • Administer and interpret the DASH-2 assessment accurately and confidently in accordance with current SASC requirements and best practice.

  • Analyse both quantitative and qualitative DASH-2 data to evaluate handwriting speed, legibility, motor control, and functional writing skills.

  • Use DASH-2 assessment outcomes to inform diagnostic decision-making and recommendations, including applications for access arrangements.

  • Produce clear, evidence-based reports that effectively communicate handwriting assessment findings and their educational implications.
