Description
It has been shown that a person can be dyslexic regardless of the literacy skills of the person (Miles et al 2003). Often having compensating factors like good verbal abilities in their underlying ability or differences in the student’s profile indicates that processing skills may be difficult especially in a more challenging academic environment like moving from primary to Secondary School. Singleton 1999 reported that 43 per cent of students identified as being dyslexic in Higher Education in the UK were not diagnosed with dyslexia prior to attending university as their literacy skills were reasonable in a less academically challenging environment. This webinar will help assessors diagnose the academic able dyslexic child at school which will enable an effective transition into Higher Education. In this webinar, the academic strengths presented in the diagnostic process will be explored and compared to other measurable abilities which may not match what academic skills that high underlying abilities might indicate. Qualitative information like motivation and background of the student will be discussed. This webinar will enable an assessor to feel more confident in offering a diagnostic judgement when assessing an academically able person.
